The Caucasus has a unique diversity of plants and animals, to say nothing of cultures, traditions and peoples. Some of the early research of the Caucasian flora was carried our by the Berlin-based botanists such as Karl Koch. The founder of the first Natural History Museum in Tbilissi, Gustav Radde, had close contacts with Adolf Enlger, the founding Director  of the Botanic Garden in Berlin. It is this long tradition of scientific exchange that has been revived and has resulted in the exhibition The Caucasus: Plant Diversity Between the Black and the Caspian Seas that is on now at the at the Botanical Garden and the Botanical Museum in Berlin. The exhibition will be running till 22. February, 2015.

The exhibition has been prepared thanks to close cooperation with the Institute of Botany of the Armenian National Academy of Sciences and the Yerevan State University, the Institute of Botany of Azerbaijan National Academy  of Sciences and the National Botanical Garden of Georgia  and the Ilia State University, Georgia  as well as the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) with the generous support of the Volkswagen Foundation.

The exhibition presents to the audiences the amazing bio-diversity of the Caucasus. It further highlights the scientific research and exchange between the academic institutions involved. The main focus of the research is conservation of the biodiversity of the Caucasus, sustainable development, facilitation of international cooperation.

A major topic for the Armenian research team is the genus Pyrus. More than 35  wild pear species grow in the region , of which a majority occurs in the woodlands of Armenia. These plants are very valuable crops but very difficult from taxonomic point of view. The implemented DNA analysis is therefore very helpful to answer questions concerning reliable diagnostic features of the species which is fundamental  for conservation.

In Azerbaijan significant results are achieved in projects dealing with the conservation of the genetic diversity and phylogeography of relict plants such as Zelkova carpinifolia, and the status and population structure of the Hyrcanian endemic species: Gleditsia caspica for example. The modernization of the Herbarium in the Institute of Botany in Baku was initiated by the project and subsequently a local state fund allowed for fully changing the infrastructure of the most significant herbarium of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Georgia, although a small country has remarkably diverse vegetation. A National Action Plan for Biodiversity Conservation has been developed. Existing national parks have been complemented by new  protected areas to make up a country-wide system. The National Botanical Garden of Georgia, the Institute of Botany, Ilia State University have started a partnership with the Botanic Garden and the Botanical Museum Berlin-Dahlem, building upon the historical connections between botanists in Berlin and Tbililsi.

Lena Hoschek at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin

Few designers attract as many guests for their shows as Lena Hoschek - and it's worth it!

Attention to detail and timelessness are maybe the best description of her creations. Hoschek's new collection, of course, is no exception. Opulent flower patterns, luxury fabrics,  focus on traditional handcrafts, classic, feminine silhouettes are Hoschek's  signature characteristics for the coming season.

Seeing her oeuvre is like tracing the history of costume that breathes new life in Hoschek's  creative vision. The new designs, as always, with Hoschek draw upon centuries-old traditional folk costumes, ethnic motives - a wonderful and rare example when the past inspires the present. In her interpretation folk inspired dresses, reminiscent of dirndl, for example, acquire particular coolness, zeitgeist and freedom from convention.

Put on a dirndl and be fabulous with it - yes she can!

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin / New Collection of Dorothee Schumacher

Dorothee Schumacher's new collection Spring/Summer 2015 was undoubtedly one of the highlights of the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin. Numerous guests, celebrities and fashion experts were invited to St. Elisabeth Church in Berlin Mitte. The church conceived by Friedrich Schinkel in 1830-ies has a special history inspired ambience where tradition and modernity meet.

The key details of Dorothee Schumacher's collection are leather strips, net optics, bondage elements, tromp -l'oeil prints  on silk and flower harnesses made of cotton blossoms. Fabrics: cotton, chiffon and silk underlie transparency, subtle silhouettes and healthy body structure, toughness of mind and spirit. The garment contours underlie the ultimate symbol of vibe: sexy and vibrant, subtle and soft, intelligent and self-confident. Prints and colors emphasize flower camouflage, millefleurs-pattern in olive tones, white, aqua tones and soft yellow, nudes palette for the summer.

Dorothee Schumacher's  show room will soon open in Paris. The label's flagship store opening is also planned soon in Dusseldorf.

The huge hall of Schinkel's St. Elisabeth Church in Berlin-Mitte was full to the brim with fashion experts, celebrities, honorable guests and Dorothee Schumacher's admirers - all excited and looking forward to see the new collection.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, July 20

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is one of the highlights of Berlin with its extravagant parties, aspiring designers and shows. The question is are you in or are you out?

                                                           My advice: be in
                                                                     be Berl-in

It's not only the shows that are interesting but the wonderful guests themselves that make the lobby sometimes more inspiring than designer shows
This lego inspired and Piet Mondrian style colored bag by the Italian label les petit joueurs is an absolute hit, no doubt

The company for women underwear Triumph invited the guests to express themselves in writing and drawing as to what they stand for. See below to triumph together

Designs by Bojana Draca, the designer behind Farah Floyd label. Bojana is alumni of the ESMOD School of Design now presenting her newest work in Green Show Room, Hotel Adlon Kempinski
